What are the pros and cons of the spectrum currently being auctions off vs. spectrum in higher bands like 2.5GHz and 2.6 GHz

Unfortunately for wimax, this spectrum is not optmized for it. If my understanding is correct, Wimax spectrum is typically unified rather than the split uplink/downlink bands provided in this auction.

And nortel sticks to making equipment and are not participating in the auction.

Also they seem to have recently divested their wimax business to focus on LTE...

There are some people however ultimately proposing a unification of wimax and LTE standards some time in the future.

Some participants may use this spectrum for HSPA then move to LTE (Rogers, new entrants most likely). Whereas other winners may sit on the spectrum until LTE is ready to deploy.

Also they seem to have recently divested their wimax business to focus on LTE…

I’m not sure what frequency it's can reside on, or if Nortel is involved in the auction, but LTE (long term evolution) rather than the rival 4G technology, WiMax is an alternative here.
