April 15th, 2008HSPA FTW! bittorrent on Rogers Wireless is fast and unthrottled

Posted by Editor in HSPA, Rogers

Get this for delicious ironies of our day. Download speeds on Rogers wireless cellular/HSDPA network are hitting 250 kBytes/sec. Observed torrent rates on the throttled-within-an-inch-of-its-life home “broad”-band are closer to 30 kBytes/sec. What does this mean?

Rogers wireless network is wide open. No deep packet inspection. Due to the physics of airwaves, it’s the one network that should be most constrained and yet they’ll let you run all the bandwidth saturating P2P apps you want. Crazy that you can do this over the air but not over wireline.

Mobile broadband is fast. The highspeed airwaves are empty, like a fresh built freeway just before it’s consumed by suburbia. enjoy while the going is good.

Pissed off by slow access over cable? Run a few torrents over the air. Better effective bandwidth and you can take it anywhere.

Somewhere, someplace, a Rogers network engineer wants to kill me for telling you this.

*This is with a 3.6Mbs cellular PC card (about $99 unlocked on eBay) . 7.2Mbs cards are also on the market, and the network may be capable of it in your area.

maybe they know its open and don’t care because you’ll soon be over your cap at that speed torrenting. that just your downstream. what’s upstream?

    @250kB/sec + 50kB/sec = ~17.52megabytes/ min
    ~ 1GB/hr.

i think they want you to torrent.

So you can buy the card for $99 – what kind of service do you have for this kind of speed?

All I need is an ExpressCard and I’d be one happy camper.

Are you still not paying for the data charges?

I never really had problems Downloading torrents. Uploading/seeding torrents on Rogers is essentially blocked! Does this method let you upload at 50 k/sec like you used to be able to do before Rogers slashed their service.

There are definately catches. Under the best rogers plan the first GB costs you $65 + system access fee, the next 4 GB cost you $10 each and afterthat $30 a gigabyte.

Which makes torrenting (at these rates) more of a fun but fairly expensive toy, rather than the future vision of digital HD content distribution.

I’m aware of differing experiences with throttling on the rogers cable network, they may well have differing or changing policies in various areas or neighbourhoods – feedback appreciated!

The really crazy thing is that they also say on their website that you won't be charged more than $100 a month, regardless of usage. $100 for 7.2Mbs unthrottled wireless internet anywhere in the GTA seems pretty awesome to me.

I hit those speeds regularly with just plain rogers internet. The speeds are affected by the number of people in the area. In my town of 13ish thousand, I get 250-400ks no problem. In the city, 75ish+ thousand, you're lucky to hit 100kbs. All on just regular rogers cable internet.

[...] unlike Rogers cable, Bittorrent on HSPA+ is very fast and unthrottled. >800 KBytes/sec (!) And we thought 250 was impressive just a few years ago. At this speed you could blow through your 6GByte monthly cap in about 2 hours [...]
