May 2nd, 2008Bell on a slippery slope of pricing honesty

Posted by Jevon in Carriers, Uncategorized, bell

I may have given Rogers a hard time about confusing pricing earlier, but they hardly deserve all of the blame. Bell didn’t want to let me go in to the weekend disappointed, so they delivered a treat right to my mailbox after lunch. This isn’t wireless, but you know where they got their inspiration from.

While you were still getting used to your 80GB bandwidth cap, Bell has a special treat on your Home DSL connection.

Lets have a look!

$73.95 per month for Cable TV, Home Phone AND Basic Internet. Not bad is it?

Lets take a look at the fine print. There is a lot of it, so how bad can it be?

Oh no! Got me! 2GB per month. How much will extra GB cost? They won’t say, just “extra”

So there you have it. Bell is introducing 2GB usages caps on Home Internet, and you pay-per-use after that. This isn’t 3G, or EVDO,. no. This is DSL.

So, for a special WirelessNorth prize, lets have an essay contest. What would you do with your 2GB of internet per month? Check your email? Perhaps online banking a couple times a week? Most creative response gets a prize. (must be picked up in Toronto, no 3-year contracts required. Promise)

This is just the tip of the iceberg for the "new" Bell. Take a look at the sheer volume and consistency of reports of business malpractice, customer deception and outright dishonesty at this Bell Sympatico forum, mainly frequented by the "nerd" community.

I'd use the 2gb to post my displeasure with the Canadian Telecom industry as far and wide as possible...well that and order books off amazon to fill up the time I can no longer use carefree on the internet.

    I'd stick to telnet BBSes.

I'd download a cracked copy of Adobe Premier so I could make a small film basically saying "F^#@ You Bell"

Seriously, this is stupid. What ISP out there in Ontario is good for things like large amount of downloading?

I'd make lynx my default browser and browse worry-free.

mmm have you noticed that this is fiber optic? in the ad? if you find a service that can handle the load, you could reach 2GB in a few seconds.
  • Jevon
They are just mentioning that they have a fiber optic network. Which is the network between the switched. You don't get Fiber to your house, just the usual DSL,.

also worth noting there is another possible $280 in fees via the small print.... Guess that eats up the 2 months free.... =(
  • Alistair
My AppleTV™ would have that 2GB an extra 2GB over, simply watching one HD movie. and it would still cost me $5.99 For the film!! Plus the overages that Bell decides to charge, we'll call it "X" Knowing Bell however, ( x = worst case scenario )

As a web designer my email approaches about 15 Gig a month in PSD files, Photos, Zips etc.. thats just the outgoing!

Nice Find Jevon, this is manipulation, at least Rogers gives you a set 60 gigabytes and usually more than enough for a family.

I'd turn down the frequency of my RSS reader and only use twitter over SMS. All of my bandwidth is to be saved for that one documentary on Google Video.
