June 30th, 2008Tens of thousands sign rogered iPhone petition

Posted by Editor in Rogers, iphone

Thanks to everyone who wrote in. It’s worth mentioning that a few (by few we mean 20,000 and counting) densizens have gathered to express their opinions on Rogers’ new iPhone pricing. They don’t like it. And this story has legs, having been picked up by fortune/CNN 15,000 Canadians petition for iPhone rate relief and the globe’s report on business. RuinedIphone is taking the noble if possibly quixotic approach of hoping for lower tariff by asking Steve and Ted nicely. The petition site is also somewhere between a blend of savvy populist rabble rousing and a clever way to reap donation money. We wish we’d thought of it.

Note that wirelessnorth.ca always welcomes your unsolicited EMT and paypal donations to editor@wirelessnorth.ca.

F.-U. rogers. No iPhone for me 'til it's available from another carrier (like if/when Telus gets some GSM deployed...). Competition might actually shake things up enough to make things reasonable.

Their Hosting service pulled the plug- Didn't get many details, although I know they got a dedicated server. Perhaps the change in DNS hasn't propagated everywhere yet... They're up to 28,421 signatures. It's great to see this although it may not have much impact in the short term. Nonetheless, I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the Rogers PR dept. Better yet, I'd love to know what Mr. Rogers really thinks about all of this complaining. Is there any remorse at all? Hope you all encourage everyone you know to sign- this has to be one of the largest protests we've seen towards our favourite Telco. Will be great if we can all hold off on buying the new iPhone (breaks my heart, cause I am a Mac Fanboy). This being said- I'm sure that if we do hold off, Roger's will spin it as a plus for blackberry or something.....nuff said...

Our problem in Canada is that we're stuck with a GSM monopoly. Our government made the bewildering move of allowing Rogers to swallow up Fido -- the only other GSM provider here -- instead of letting T-Mobile buy a controlling stake.

And we've been suffering ever since...

I wonder if actually anyone knows why rates are so expensive in Canada compared to rest of the world. Is it because of higher margins taken by carriers? is it because they are not efficient enough (old or outdated equipment)? is it because the territory is too big, forcing them to spend more on infrastructure compared to other countries? is it because the penetration and usage rates are so low that they have to make the existing customer base pay for the service?

is there a study on this ? say comparing rogers' operating costs with those of the likes of NTT Docomo (Japan) Orange (Europe)
    anyone?
