July 8th, 2008Spectrum Auction: Round 212 and not ending 5 lousy bids at a time

Posted by Editor in spectrum

Remember Canada’s Spectrum Auction? Well, it’s still not over yet. While nearly 300 individual licenses totaling nearly 4.2 Billion dollars have been settled, a few bidders are still fussing over a tiny number of remaining licenses. The last few days have seen only 3-5 licenses changing hands for increment tens of thousands of dollars or 0.002% of the total. Round 212 action (only 5 new bids):

Licence	Service Area Previous High Bidder	Current High Bidder
302d 10 MHz-Prince Edward Island Globalive Wireless SaskTel
304d 10 MHz-Cape Breton Globalive Wireless SaskTel
356d 10 MHz-Thompson/Cariboo Rich Telecom Corp. 1380057 Alberta Ltd.
316e 10 MHz-Pembroke Globalive Wireless Bell Mobility Inc.
331e 10 MHz-Chatham Canquest Bell Mobility Inc.

Come on kids, lets wrap this up so all can get to finally delivering wonderful new services on these ready and waiting airwaves. And don’t ask us why SaskTel suddenly has a hankering for Anne of Green Gables. Maybe there’s a potato connection?

To try and accelerate the close of the auction, Industry Canada has added an 11th round of bidding to schedule for the remainder of this week.

    Hello,

Could you explain please, 10Mhz in which band ?

  • http://www.slideshare.net/ishmelev/national-service-network/ Ivan Canarus

.. and addition question. Actually 10Mhz it is nothing. How the opperators are going to use it ?

Read up on the spectrum auction here: http://wirelessnorth.ca/2008/01/29/everything-y…

10MHz is the smallest block size currently offered in this auction out of 90MHz total in the AWS band. 10MHz is just enough to offer service in any given area. But more spectrum allows carriers to serve more customers per cell area, or the same number of customers with larger cells (requiring fewer towers).

    WirelessNorth ,

Thanks a lot for the information. It is means they are biting only for 3G licenses ! But there are not successful stories of 3G business around the world ! It takes 4-5 years to bring LTE into the market. But the same situation, nobody has introduced how to monetize this technology. We already have 3G indicator on our phones, but don`t have new services. Have the operators announced their business strategies ? What kind of services they are going to provide ?

Also I am not sure that 10Mhz is enough to provide 2Mbit wireless access, for example for two million customers within one specific region. What do you think is a maximum customer database with 2Mbit wireless service ?

Is any spectrum for digital TV (MDS) available in Canada ?

    Thanks

    Ivan

The National Post has an article about the Wireless Tax – Spectrum Auctions. The cost per subscriber is estimated at $210. The total auction proceeds of $4.2-billion are up-front sunk costs that will have to be recouped by wireless companies before they build even one new tower. There should be some alternative to spectrum auctions found to relieve the consumer of high cost wireless…
