July 23rd, 2008Rogers limited $30 for 6GB actually a pretty good deal

Posted by Editor in Rogers, datarates

You may have heard of this one already, but Rogers is limited time offering of a $30 data plan for 6GB of usage. That’s a lot of usage. That’s 18 times more data than a comparable $30 for 300MB with Rogers offers on the blackberry. And even at high speeds, you’re going to need to do a lot of streaming, or torrenting or something, to hit a 6GB cap on a mobile device. Remember this is the plan that came of all the outcry created all over the press, the internets, and here too, over Rogers steep rates for the iPhone 3G. The 30/6GB plan is the one limited time only concession to the haters and pent-up frustrated Rogers customers out there.

There’s more than a few catches. But here’s why the catches don’t really matter:

Catch 1: it’s only on a three year plan. But the good news, the cancellation penalty for data plans is only $100 anytime in the next 3 years.

Catch 2: the plan goes away August 31st. We’re going to go out on a limb here, and suggest that Rogers is not going to come out with an even better offer the day after. More like the opposite.

Catch 3: You can’t even get an iPhone 3G or Blackberry Bold or other next gen 3G device yet to make it worth while. Ya, but you could get one later and hold on to the 30/60GB plan when you do. Ideally, you could go through all sorts of devices in the next 3 years but hang on to the 30/6GB plan if it’s still the best out there.

Catch 4: More competition is coming in just a year and they may have great offers too. Or they may not. 30/6GB is pretty cheap for data and after paying off industry Canada, your new entrants may or may not be able to beat it. And then cancellation only costs $100 and you can still say bye bye Rogers.

Last catch: the charge is not $100 if you are also canceling a voice plan or other contract at the same time. In that case, according to the fine print, you could be on the hook for a standard $400 contract penalty PLUS the $100 data plan cancellation charge. Ouch. So if you might want to get out of it, this offer is best if NOT switching to Rogers for the first time and/or signing up for a whole new phone with it. Question your CSR carefully about that one.

The plan doesn’t work for data cards (too bad) but it is good for any smartphone including current/future blackberries if you have a personal blackberry as opposed to enterprise (gotta keep milking those enterprise clients). We’re unclear on thethering with this plan, that would be wonderful to get away with, but we’d say don’t necessarily get your hopes up.

Anyway if you are an existing Rogers Customer, or not otherwise signing up for a new 3 year voice contract, you might want to jump on this. This little plan could be like the next mythic legendary grandfathered $20 fido unlimited offer that a select few locked in to and hung on for years.

Recommended.

We should all protest Rogers more often…

I just wish they would make it affordable to do the occasional browsing. They would be smart to do so, as once people got addicted, they would be buying the more expensive data plans.

Say $5 for 200MB or something like that. I don't need 6gb, and can't justify more than $5. I sit at a desk most of the time. But occasionaly while shopping, surfing is handy.

the $30 barrier to entry is just too much for small time users. they need to get that down.

but from time to time, I can just not log onto 3.5G network in the afternoon in my office area. My office is in North York Center, a pretty big office and residence area. I assume Rogers' infrastructures just can't accommodate the new data demand yet.

This does look like a good deal, but it's the 3-year contract that I wonder about. 3 years ago, 6GB of data/month would've cost you $3.6 million/year; at the non-promotion price today it's $1200/year. With this promotion, it brings it down to $360/year. How much further will data rates drop in the next year or two...?

Even $360/year for 6GB/month is more than I'm willing to pay to have to deal with Rogers tech support. I may consider getting it through Fido...

I've been a heavy user of the web browser, email, RSS feeds (netnewswire), uploading and downloading pics all over the place, and also downloading on the go applications from the App store

    ...

and my total usage is 120mb !!!!! for 20 days! I can't imagine what I could do to fill the 5.8Gb left!

This still works with BES accounts, we use BES for email and I am running the 30 dollar 6 gig plan with out issues,

...or small businesses could stop using BES ;)

One app I've noticed works well on the blackberry: Gmail.

This plan is not provisioned for BES. Sounds like we need to start a new petition for small business owners!

I got a question about this, hopefully some one can help me out.

Can I get a data only plan?! For $30 + SAF seems good!

I currently have a contract with Fido for just over 1 more year, but they give me a sweet deal (retentions) which I probably won't get anything close to with Rogers (for voice)

Ahh, and I need Rogers for BIS!!

If I had a contract with Rogers already, and I got an iPhone 3G with the 6GB dataplan, does that mean I'm under 3 year contract for ONLY a dataplan, or is that voice as well?

I have been using a telus unlimited data plan (on a PC card only) and I use it allot, it costs 92$ all included (no contract) the max I have used is 5.4GB and that is the month when it became our main connection for a week wile our ADSL was down, So yes 6GB for 30$ is very good, another Mythical Plan is the Unlimited Voice City fido plan that rogers killed when they acquired Fido. Apparently 240 000+ clients still have it. As for tethering, FIDO CSR said it was not problem but they are often confused. Tethering on an iphone as far as i know is a hack on v1X devices, not sure about V2 G3s.

After I found out that AT&T capped their "unlimited" data plan at 5GB, I came to the same conclusion that the Rogers $30/60GB deal is actually pretty decent.

I don't actually see myself using 6GB in a month but I like the "never have to worry" feeling of whipping out the iPhone whenever/whereever and using the 3G data.

There's no way Rogers will bring out a better deal. They will likely remove the promotion at the end of August and maybe re-introduce something similar for the Christmas rush.
