August 14th, 2008Rogers HSDPA network slowing down?

Posted by Editor in HSPA, Rogers, dongles

Just a few months ago, we were raving about the speed of Rogers HSDPA network. Recently, and anecdotaly, it appears that average download speeds declining. Blame the iPhone or more usb broadband sticks on the network perhaps. In any case, please write in if you’ve noticed a similar experience, or peak speeds if can measure it. If we get any more data points we’ll report them back. Wireless connections are fickle things. We’d also be curious to know fastest effective speeds that can be wrung out of a Telus/Bell EVDO or EVDOrevA connection, if anyone’s got one.

I have very disappointing speeds on my RocketStick modem aka Mobile Laptop modem. HSPA is supposed to provide over 7mbps in the HSPA coverage area, but the fastest I've measured (and only once) was just over 3mbps. Every other time I've run the speakeasy.net/speedtest the results are about 1mbps give or take a few hundred k. I have an open complaint into Rogers and I am waiting for a response. I am in the middle of Vancouver, BC, so HSPA should be excellent here, but so far is much less than excellent.

As a follow-up the speeds are really varying. At times I'm seeing 1.5-2 Mbps.Probably a combination of network traffic and protocol implementation.

I think the 3g network here is slow. Near Metrotown, it's 500 or more

    2nd test: 187 Kb/second

    I'm in Burnaby, by Production Way Skytrain, and using my iphone 3g I get a horrible 91 Kb/second. It's 3PM. Upload 44.165 Kb/second

I think I was sorta quoted:

Wirelessnorth.ca got a mention at the bottom. I did some obsessive(ish) testing from 8am - 9am on North Campus (R & T Park) in Waterloo:

I did get great speed until it got closer to 9am and the parking lots filled up. Keep in mind this is with hardly any students in town. I can't wait until September...

Using Speedtest on iPhone, Queen and Spadina, Toronto with full 3G signal, 367 Kb/sec down and 95 Kb/sec up. Switching to WiFi 3159 Kb/sec down and 1829 Kb/sec up.

Over subscribing customers already? I know a fix, bandwidth throttling!!!

Using the Speedtest app for my iPhone 3G, I get 420-442 kbps

And using the inetworktest.com iphone test, i get 391.5 kbps.

This is from downtown Toronto at University & Dundas

    i get in Montreal
    179 kb/sec for download
    and
    111 kb/sec for upload

I was running the speed test all day in Waterloo and got really bad speeds:

Tried edge too and it was just painful, 56kbps or worse. EDGE was always painful in Waterloo with the high density of RIM employees and blackberry users in general but now its just choked unless you head towards Cambridge.

on Bell EVDO (not sure if it's rev A or not) in downtown Calgary, I get: 374 kbps when using http://www.inetworktest.com/iphone.

My iPod Touch gets 680 kbps on my office WiFi connection (Wireless G router).

Sounds like a data crowd-sourcing opportunity. Maybe setup a google spreadsheet with gps location, date/time and other info? I'll contribute once I finally get my iPhone from Rogers fulfillment and number-porting hell, which I won't go into here and now. (sigh)
