February 20th, 2009Twitter is back! but only on Bell mobility

Posted by Editor in bell

From the official twitter blog:

Today we’re super excited to be activating full, two-way SMS service for Canadian Twitter-ers who are also customers of Bell Mobility. If you’re a Bell Mobility customer, you can update Twitter via SMS and receive updates from Twitter via SMS. There are no limits and no added fees (beyond your normal texting plan). If you haven’t already, you can activate your phone to Twitter over SMS. Special thanks to Bell’s enthusiasm and eagerness to make this happen.

Congrats to the folks at Bell for seeing the light, and a nice competitive PR spin for them, insofar as helping Telus and Rogers continue to look like total asses on this one.

but isn't this just because bell charges their users for incoming text messages anyway?

    who cares
3rd party services such as twe2 allowed us as well as people in unsupported countries to get sms tweets
thanks bell for coming last in another race :(

Great move in Bell's part. Twitter is really in the mainstream consciousness – I'm waiting to hear from my mom that she's signed up. Making it ubiquitously available is a win on both sides of the table.

Sounded good – but it's completely untrue. Bell has revealed they will be charging all of their Twitter customers for 15 cents per Tweet, inbound or outbound, with or without a text plan! Making Telus and Rogers look like asses? Not exactly.

Outgoing Tweets will be 15c if you don't have a bundle, included if you have a bundle.
Also, all incoming tweets are free, regardless of bundle or not.

Not sure where you're getting your information.

That is only because Bell backed down. Originally they were going to charge $0.15 per incoming text message from Twitter. This was confirmed by a Bell spokesperson: http://mashable.com/2009/02/25/twitter-sms-price/

Twitter is back? Where did it go? There are only about 50 free twitter apps in the app store for your phone and uh, they're um, free, so I never noticed twitter going away from my phone…are you saying you're using a phone that doesn't have internet? I guess you would have to pay for everything if that were the case…
