April 27th, 2009Telus taking a run at Globalive for foreign ownership

Posted by Editor in spectrum

From the WirelessNorth.ca submission engine:

Last year, Telus asked Industry Canada to publicly review Globalive’s ownership structure (globalive-under-fire). However, their request was turned down.

Now, Telus is questioning the legality of Industry Canada’s 5-month long extensive ownership review of Globalive. They are asking CRTC to publicly re-examine Globalive, so that they can have their own say in it. More on Toronto Star here:

Do they want to create roadblocks for Globalive, or delay their launch?

Tony Lacavera, Globalive’s CEO, has also posted about this on wirelesssoapbox.com. He says, “There are a lot of people in the telecom industry looking at WirelessSoapbox so if you have something to say about this latest move by Telus – I’d invite you to share it here.”

This is the major problem with Canada's “Canada-only” ownership requirement. In essential primary-resource industry, such as energy, steel, successive Canadian governments have allowed wholesale privatization or sale. But for some reason (*coughhackeryhack*), major telecoms don't have to compete. The European model of telecommunications (a.k.a. no national ownership requirements) seems to be a boon for consumers, who have more choice, shorter contracts, better phone selection, and a substantially wider array of offered services (Skype, Mobile-Computer Tethering, RFID spoofing, Wireless Payments).

It's time we stop protecting our dinosaur-Telecoms, and welcome Vodaphone, 3, Orange, T-Mobile, and O2 the ability to compete on equal footing in Canada.

    Shame on Telus!
