This is the major problem with Canada's "Canada-only" ownership requirement. In essential primary-resource industry, such as energy, steel, successive Canadian governments have allowed wholesale privatization or sale. But for some reason (*coughhackeryhack*), major telecoms don't have to compete. The European model of telecommunications (a.k.a. no national ownership requirements) seems to be a boon for consumers, who have more choice, shorter contracts, better phone selection, and a substantially wider array of offered services (Skype, Mobile-Computer Tethering, RFID spoofing, Wireless Payments).

It's time we stop protecting our dinosaur-Telecoms, and welcome Vodaphone, 3, Orange, T-Mobile, and O2 the ability to compete on equal footing in Canada.

Shame on Telus!
