Telus has announced it’s iPhone launch for November 5th of this year, at the same time they are announcing their half of the new 21MB HSPA+ (same speed as Rogers) network they’ve been rolling out with Bell. Telus is calling it “Canada’s largest 3G+ network“. We have no idea what that is supposed to mean.

What we do know, is that things are looking up in Canada Wireless-wise. Compared, for instance, with our poor American neighbours to the south we now have not one but three (and soon to be more) offering the latest 3G standards all of whom offer, generally, far better reliability than the US’s largest GSM carrier AT&T.

On top of which we now have three carriers offering the iPhone 3GS as well as, we trust, some very nice next-generation androids and blackberries (9700’s) any day now.

It’s going to be a very good Christmas to look for smartphones and broadband sticks in your stockings.

And I just wish the Canadian wireless carriers would concentrate on running wireless networks, rather than payment plans for phones.

Let users pay for the phones (or arrange payment plans with separate 3rd parties), then users would have maximum choice.

I don't like the forced vertical integration. It's like having to buy a car from a specific gasoline retailer, and only being able to use their gasoline.

I called Telus last week and the support person "reluctantly" told me (I was calling to terminate an account) that the both the iPhone and the Palm Pre were coming very soon, i.e. when they would announce their new 3G network. Now I'm not sure if the information on the Pre was accurate, but it certainly be nice to have carriers provide multiple options for smartphones (instead of having to choose your carrier based on your phone preference or vice versa).

I have read the "largest" claim from both Telus and Bell but with slightly different wording. Is this due to the fact that they are sharing any or part of that network?

Telus is actually the only one I have not tried out personally. Perhaps this will give me a chance to do so. Then I can officially complain and be disgruntled with all 3 of our national carriers.
