December 22nd, 2009Does unlimited even matter anymore?

Posted by Editor in Uncategorized

Unless you’re a cab driver or a realestate agent, is unlimited voice still what it used to be? Thanks to the wonders of technology, we find the vast majority of usage on a mobile phone is shifting from “phoning anyone” to SMS, IM, Web, Twitter, Facebooking, skype, gtalk, foursquaring not to mention games, web and using that bright screen to find your way across your apartment in the dark.

I would never go anywhere without it, but I think I could count on one hand the number of actual calls I placed on my mobile last month.

Unlimited minutes. What are they good for?

What are they good for? How about for calling back your mother or girlfriend when you don't answer the texts, IMs or emails they've already sent? Huh? How about that?

The thing is, the phone system is itself moving to data with VoIP ... you don't need to have separate minute plans anymore, they're just trying to still sell you the same thing over and over again in separated channels while in the end it's all just _data_! :-)

It's all about getting in the ISP business first... that's it.
If i can get unlimited DSL like speed anywhere i go, why bother with a home line?

Nokia blogger Ricky Cadden (aka The Symbian Guru) has an excellent blog post on the subject:

It looks like voice calls are becoming an artifact of the 20th century. I'm entirely ok with that.

Unlimited might be more about not having to think about making that phone call. Its the convenience of not having to worry if you've gone over your daytime minutes or if you're evenings/weekends have started yet.

Unlimited minutes are not much good for me, personally, but several of my buddies spend 2 to 3 hours a day on the phone with their girlfriends. I think they'll save a lot of money by moving over to Wind.

I think this is exactly why globalive is going forward with it's unlimited voice plans. A call on a modern HSPA network takes hardly any spectrum, let alone a text message. Data is the future. The only question is whether it will overwhelm the networks or whether they can keep up.
